This pictorial guide was written to document Katrina's force and is dedicated to honor her victims and heroes.
At the time of this printing, just over one year has passed since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the gulf coast. The time seemed to have passed very quickly, yet many of us that lived through it feel as if we have aged in years. Everyone has their own personal story of how Katraina affected their life. Even those who did not suffer physical or monetary damage have had their lives altered in some way. Neighborhoods have vanished, families have been separated, lives have been uprooted, and faith in all levels of goverment has been challenged.
A year later, there is still a tremendous amount of work that needs to be done in order to get New Orleans and the Gulf Coast back to the condition in which we are accustomed. This will take several years. We are trying to adjust to the "new normal." We have expanded our vocabulary with such words as blue roofs, FEMA trailers, and modular homes.
For the most part, dealing with Katrina brought out the best in people. This was manifested in the inner strength it took for her survivors to endure, the courage of those first responders that risked so much to help, and the generosity of those from near and far who reached deep into their hearts and wallets to give what they could to assist. We salute all of these heroes.
This book has very few words. As a life long resident of New Orleans, words cannot describe the destruction caused by the hurricane in New Orleans and all areas along the Gulf Coast, and it is not until you are standing in someone's front yard and completely encircled by destruction that you can fully comprehend what has occurred.
